ALEXANDER (SANDY) CALDER (American 1898-1976) Untitled (commonly referred to as the “Dove”) Stabile, table top sculpture (Maquette) Sections of brass/copper plates 13 inches high Impressed with artist’s initials The sculpture is in good condition. The Segre Iron Works in Connecticut was Calder’s metal statue fabricator. With Calder’s authorization, about 10 – 12 pieces were made and presented as awards for a New York Art Dealers Association. This sculpture was the unique prototype (maquette) for the award pieces. It became known as the “DOVE” because of its general similarity to that bird about to take flight. With Calder’s authorization, Carmine Segre (owner of the Iron Works at that time) gave this prototype sculpture to his neighbors and good friends, who were also friends of the artist. The Calder Foundation gives registration numbers only to unique (one of a kind) sculptures, paintings and drawings. Sandy Calder, grandson of the artist and Head of the Calder Foundation and Steven Segre, son of the original Iron Works owner have both viewed this Calder sculpture and both have confirmed the above information to the prior owner and heir of the Florida Estate who was the original owner.
